“Nature filled in many empty spaces after the global shut downs. Without so much human interference, nature behaved in interesting and sometimes surprising ways. To this day the unassuming pangolin factors into a potential origin story of Covid-19. These animals embody mental toughness and fortitude with their armor-like coats. Looking to nature for this work, insects and fruits are also featured, appearing as part of a cautionary-tale and demonstrating thriving despite the missing human imprint.
Animals and nature have played key roles in my work. As an illustrator, I often wonder what lessons animals can convey or teach us. I admire the resilience of nature and at the same time hope that humans strive further to protect a world that is being depleted and exploited daily. In the meantime, nature stands ready to fill in the gaps and time will tell where humans factor into this new landscape.
The “Whistleblower Series” features the iconic giraffe hero, who sticks her neck out to support others on issues of workplace safety and ethics. The Whistleblowers of America, a key organization supporting whistleblowers across the country, spreads awareness with this animal icon and puts forward a call to make art, “The Art of Advocacy,” inspiring this work. This series explores the power of speaking up to protect the vulnerable, and in speaking out and coming together saving our humanity.”
